How overtime pay is calculated
Regular pay covers your standard hours at your regular rate. Overtime pay applies your chosen multiplier to your overtime hours. Your blended rate shows the average across both.
Regular pay = Hourly rate × Regular hours
Overtime pay = (Hourly rate × Multiplier) × Overtime hours
Total pay = Regular pay + Overtime pay
Blended rate = Total pay ÷ (Regular hours + Overtime hours)
Overtime rules vary. Some employers pay overtime after 40 hours/week, others after 8 hours/day, and some jurisdictions have different thresholds entirely. Check your employment agreement or local labor law for what actually applies to you.
Frequently asked questions
Does this calculator use legal overtime rules?
No. Overtime rules — including when overtime applies and what multiplier is required — vary by country, state or province, and employer policy. This calculator applies the multiplier you enter; it does not determine what you're legally owed.
What is a blended hourly rate?
Your blended rate is your total pay divided by your total hours (regular plus overtime). It shows your average pay per hour across the whole pay period.
What overtime multiplier should I use?
1.5x ("time and a half") and 2x ("double time") are common, but your employer's policy or local labor law determines the actual rate that applies to you. Check your pay stub or ask HR if you're unsure.
