How hours worked is calculated
Elapsed time is the raw time between clock-in and clock-out. Subtracting your unpaid break gives your actual working time, which is then converted to decimal hours for easy use in payroll or invoicing.
With a second period added, totals from both periods are combined. The two periods shouldn't overlap: if they do, the calculator flags it instead of counting the shared time twice.
Example
A split shift: 08:00–12:00 with no break, then 13:00–17:30 with a 15-minute unpaid break.
- Period 1: 4 h elapsed − 0 min break = 4.00 h
- Period 2: 4 h 30 min elapsed − 15 min break = 4 h 15 min = 4.25 h
- Total: 8 h 15 min = 8.25 decimal hours (15 min ÷ 60 = 0.25)
An overnight shift works the same way: 22:00–06:00 with a 30-minute break is 8 h elapsed − 30 min = 7.5 hours.
